It's that time of year for hot days and fun summertime activities. Summer brings with it picnics, out door concerts, the beach and busy days in the beautiful outdoors. For many being in direct sunlight or extremely hot conditions the threat of heat exhaustion or heat stroke prevail.
People with health conditions such as high blood pressure, heart conditions and those who take diuretics need to take extra precaution due to more sensitivity to heat. There are many reasons that make senior adults more prone to heat related illnesses. Senior adults have a more difficult time adjusting to changes in temperature, typically they have more chronic medical conditions, and are more likely to take medication that can impair the body's ability to regulate its temperature.

Heat Stroke Safety Tips
Move out of the sun into a shady area. Go into an air conditioned room and rest in a cool place.
Keep hydrated by drinking cool water or sports drinks. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as well as extremely cold liquids.
Lie down and elevate the legs and feet higher than the head.
Spray or sponge with cool water or soak towels in cool water and wrap around the body.
Place an ice pack on the neck, under the arms and on the groin area.
Seek medical assistance.
